Crime - On the Rise
Unfortunately, crime exists in every corner of the globe. I've seen my fare share living in Los Angeles. What's needed is a comprehensive plan to strengthen our police services.
Perhaps it's time to re-establish the RCMPs volunteer Auxiliary program to grow our force and help increase their presence in troublesome areas. Their role is specifically for:

Public Safety Education

Crime Prevention Initiatives

Assisting at Major Events
-
Traffic Control and
-
General Duty patrols with regular RCMP members
Additionally, as they interface with people on the street, they can further assess and recommend actions to improve the handling of situations.
During the summer season, they can help train a volunteer student ambassador program, that can greet tourists and locals alike ~ sharing with them the many amenities of Nanaimo.
This would reduce the fear factor that a recent poll indicated, where more than ¼ of the people were afraid to go downtown during the DAY and nearly ¾ afraid at NIGHT.
This vs. the $2.5 million to hire community safety officers.
